Wandering OpenMandriva 4: on the edge of 2014.1

Hi there!

Summer provokes for laziness a lot, but we keep on working 🙂

And before releasing OMA Lx 2014.1 we would like to share with you some of the reviews and stories about 2014.0 which we have seen. The list is surely not full, and we apologize if we missed something – in this case we would be most grateful if you point to us more links!

We also give you random extracts from some articles, but make sure not to miss the rest and other stories!

Enjoy, just as we did!

Great thanks to you guys, who took the time and effort to write these amazing stories!

My feeling is that OpenMandriva Lx 2014.0 seems to be quite solid and well finished. It’s a level of quality that can only be achieved when experienced developers and contributors are really engaged in a project. Most hardware devices are supported and configured by default. Certainly a very good root for the next releases.

Congrats to the OpenMandriva team for this release!

The system was stable, quick to respond, very beginner friendly and attractive to look at. The welcome screen is one of the best greeters I have seen, the installer is pretty friendly and the Control Centre is probably the best configuration panel in the open source world in terms of balancing function with form. I like the systemd configuration module that was added to the System Settings panel and I think it will lower the bar for people who wish to work with systemd. The desktop is a good mix of traditional and new and I feel the developers have found a good balance. In short, OpenMandriva gave me a very capable, very friendly desktop operating system and I think it is one of the better novice-friendly Linux distributions currently available.

Besides OpenBSD, the other big release of the week was by the OpenMandriva Lx project which announced its second-ever stable release, version 2014.0. Although OpenMandriva Lx is a relatively new distribution, its roots actually date back to 1998 when Gaël Duval released the first version of Mandrake Linux, a KDE-centric, desktop-oriented distribution then based on Red Hat Linux. Although Gaël Duval is no longer with any of the child projects that descended from his original work, he still takes interest in what’s happening in Linux distributions today. Last week he published a rather positive review of OpenMandriva Lx 2014.0 on his personal blog: “My feeling is that OpenMandriva Lx 2014.0 seems to be quite solid and finished. It’s a level of quality that can only be achieved when experienced developers and contributors are really engaged in a project. Most hardware devices are supported and configured by default. Certainly a very good root for the next release. Congrats to the OpenMandriva team for this release!

Ciao!

Divertitevi, proprio come abbiamo fatto noi!

Un grande ringraziamento a tutti voi ragazzi, per il tempo e l’impegno che avete dedicato per scrivere questi bellissimi articoli!
