OpenMandriva new Alpha is ready for Bug Hunting

A new version of OpenMandriva Lx is ready for Bug Hunting. There is still a lot of work to do, some already identified bugs to fix and artwork to implement.

You can get the Alpha (i586 or x86_64) at http://downloads.openmandriva.org and just give it a test drive. Let us know if you find any bugs and help us get rid of them. You can communicate with the QA Team and log bugs over at http://issues.openmandriva.org.

Update: Wow, we are suddenly getting incredible amount of traffic for ISO downloads. Thank you all for your love and curiosity for this release. Due to increased traffic, some users may get slow download speeds and even slowness in loading of this site itself. While the Infra team works to fix the situation, we urge you to use alternate download locations:

Hello, I don’t know about internal game and possible quarrels between former Mandriva’s developers, but ever since I heard about openMandriva this just bugged me.

Why create another distro? Why not just join forces with ROSA or Mageia? ROSA is quite good (although far from perfect) and Mageia is community maintained, but also apparently understaffed. It would help them to get extra manpower.

Mandriva was my first distro and I didn’t like seeing it die, but now I’m even more confused.

      • raphael on June 18, 2013 at 7:58 pm

      Hello Gad,

The first reason is simply about passion.

OpenMandriva is the combination of several groups that joined their forces, which include people from Rosa, Mandriva France, Mandriva Brazil (ex-Conectiva) and several communities, like Unity Linux and independant people.

The work is not only about making a distro, we aim at being are a true open source toolbox, where many projects can be hosted neighboring and cooperating, where spins are easy [citing arisel here] “due the work done on the code, paired with the means of the build system we use and the anarchism of some parts of the community it is really easy to see OpenMandriva as some kind of a toolbox. So while we provide a nice and hopefully interesting distributions, we also try to make it possible for other to fulfill their ideas.”

We also host our own build system, based on Git-ABF, which development is lead by ABF team at Rosa (you can follow their work here, and we share our resources with Rosa .

        • symbianflo on June 18, 2013 at 9:40 pm

Mister raphael sir still the good old mdv style huh?
And what if i say that is quite the opposite , meaning that ROSA share manpower, abf, all , practically all you got on openmdv is from rosa , and NOT the opposite, you share what with rosa ? 10-15 updated packages??? Do I have to count them on package tracker to be more precise?
How about become to be honest ( something that mdv never done, you may change the things with your attitude…) , and call the truth..???

“We also host our own build system, based on Git-ABF, and we share our resources with Rosa”
this is fucking insulting sir…. you share what ?????
Listen to me , and listen good , NO ROSA ,NO OPENMANDRIVA, period.
So you could start being honest and tell the truth, ounce in a while …

Note from moderator: this message has been published 26 june 2013 as it was automatically redirected to spam. After asking to the author (the 21th June) if he wanted us to publish it or not, with the risk to break to thread understanding, and as there is still no answer, we decided to publish with a quick note.

        1. “After asking to the author (the 21th June) if he wanted us to publish it or not, with the risk to break to thread understanding, and as there is still no answer,”

          Excuse me ???????
You ask me what and wen? were? One more proof of the old mdv-style attitude…
I don’t really know who you talked about this , but with me ,NOT, for sure….
Spam huh? ok then I ‘ve become a spamer .
lies, lies, with another lies on top of it …nice …Already saw this movie , and it sucks…
If you really are interested to make this distro to work you ‘ll need the REAL communities , and this is the wrong way to do it….
I ‘ll remind you that the former mandriva communities already get abandon ounce , will be very hard to gain somebody’s trust … IMHO, mark my words.
          Let’s see:
To all members from the former MUG:
What is your take on omv ? Do you intend to support it on your community?

          PS:
Since when you switch to spanish? Maybe is better if you’ll stick with english…IMHO

      1. Hmmmm last time I saw my previous message was in stand -by for moderation , now is gone… it’s like in the good old days
against mandriva SA… now , censured : checked, what’s next ? ban my mail ? or my IP?
I don’t care if you don’t publish my messages, my only hope is that it was a omv decision and not one hot-head moderator’s …
As you can see from my mail and my website I , WITH MY USERS ,AM A COMMUNITY not you , and as me out there are few , that still alive and kicking , so you better be prepared for what is coming , because I’ll bring it .
Just like the old mdv …you don’t need the community , maybe because you think you are the community ?
Here is a bad news , you ain’t no community , 5 packagers beside rosa payed people is not a distro ,
if your purpose in live is to perpetuate “screw the user” former mdv policy , congrats , you are doin’ fine.

          • raphael on June 21, 2013 at 10:05 am

          Mm?
Not sure to understand what you mean, sorry if I told something that hurted you 🙂

Sure you are a community, even if I don’t see the relation with the topic here.

          1. yeah right , what’s the point to publish my second post , and censored the first one?
OUT OF THE CONTEXT it has no meaning , on second thought , it does , make me look like the big bad wolf …
you ‘re good … very good, good old mandriva school huh?
            You’re good …. a worthy adversary, and since I’m chasing the high , let’s see what’s next…

            PS:
What’s the point in moderating the posts ?Why don’t let the people write whatever they think?
You got the captcha as antispam…
you ‘re good … but I’m better, mark it …

      • Diogo on June 18, 2013 at 7:26 pm

Rosa Desktop é derivado do Mandriva 2011 e o OpenMandriva continua o trabalho do Mandriva Linux no Desktop, portanto não é nada estranho essas semelhanças. O OpenMandriva é o próximo passo do Mandriva Linux 2011.

  2. Cool

    • SEBAXONE on June 18, 2013 at 9:27 pm

    _____________________________________________________________________

Hi, just want to say that Spanish is the second or third most spoken language in the world.

A Linux distribution should appreciate good support in this language.

Nice to see the word open with mandriva , any chance of a PPC version that works with Mac g5 and G4 and other PPC platforms ? Thanks

    • Gerald on June 19, 2013 at 7:05 am

Super work, thank you … please don’t abandone the tomoyo-gui, i like this tool … 🙂 The security posture of Mandriva was every time their strength.

    • T-Khan on June 19, 2013 at 7:36 am

Download speed is very low in both locations (downloads.openmandriva.org & lindev.ch). Is there other mirrors? Or maybe you need to create a torrent? P.S. Why do you bring this ugly default panel and stupid fullscreen startmenu (like in GNOME and Unity) from ROSA?

      • anoobi on June 19, 2013 at 8:34 am

Downloading it, i was thinking the same thing watching these (beautiful) screenshots.
I personally don’t like ROSA-task and i switch to classic panel as soon as i can, but it’s an easy all-in-one and ready-made panel, after all.
So i understand why keeping it as default, if an experienced user can still switch fast to other solutions.
What i cannot understand is the fullscreen menù: heavy and not well organized.
Plus, the only advantage you can get from a fullscreen menù is on touchscreen and/or netbook/transformers pad, with small screens. I still don’t get why keeping it as default choice.
The only thing i got to admit is that fullscreen menù are still better than no menù (win 8).
PS: can’t wait to have it running

You can change it, is very simple!

      • usman on June 21, 2013 at 6:05 am

two of many reasons why i’m using ROSA right now is because the default panel and menu.

    • T-Khan on June 19, 2013 at 8:03 am

I just like your installation slide-show)) Mandriva is innovative, unique, stable… (maybe in a year or two) And then it said that it needs kdm package to be installed, and than – “there is no kdm package, sorry”. And about Spanish language support asked earlier – looks like ROSA developers think there is no need in Spanish in Russian distro.

    • brando mota on June 19, 2013 at 2:48 pm

    • Bobo on June 19, 2013 at 10:32 pm

in 2001 i’ve tried mandrake and help with localiztion, along mandrake i’ve played with debian…. i’ve send massage to mandrake developers list that they have nicest(good looking) distribution but if they want to survive they have to throw away missunderstanding RPM and repackage their packages in DEB…
since then mandrake and derivates struggles and it looks that Mark readed my message
and start nice looking linux with DEB – Ubuntu.
You still can throw away strupid RPM and go with DEB!!!

    • azhag on June 20, 2013 at 9:21 am

Just to be clear: „Lx” in „OpenMandriva Lx” is a short for „Linux”?

    • blah on June 20, 2013 at 11:36 am

Deb is suck. It doesn’t support delta package like rpm does. You have to download megabytes of package for just a kilobyte of changes.

      • Bobo on June 20, 2013 at 9:32 pm

if there is such delta , but most of the time the delta is missing .. 🙂

      • usman on June 21, 2013 at 6:14 am

Can you tell me url of mandriva repository with delta packages support?

    • Michael O. on June 20, 2013 at 7:33 pm

Is OpenMandriva going to be a Rolling Release Distro?
It is very annoying to re-install a distro every 6 month or every year because the upgrade process always has many problems.

    • mohammed on June 20, 2013 at 11:27 pm

do i need antivirus and firewall ?

    • Manuel on June 21, 2013 at 8:02 am

Hello, do you have any mirrors ?

    1. For a complete list of mirrors, refer to http://downloads.openmandriva.org/mm/

        • Manuel on June 21, 2013 at 8:29 am

thanks, but well I’m looking for one with the isos, these one contain only repo (and is still named unity)
so no other mirrors with iso ?

          • Manuel on June 21, 2013 at 8:32 am

          Or the VM image
(btw your mm site is not user friendly)

            • raphael on June 21, 2013 at 10:03 am

Yes, in fact it’s still work in progress 🙂

    • Tom on June 21, 2013 at 8:28 pm

    Hi,

I have downloaded the alpha iso but once installed I can’t seem to set a root password on first boot, no cursor flashes in the input box and won’t let me click on it or set one??

    • linux nobody on June 23, 2013 at 6:10 am

The “Start menu” that covers the whole screen is one the worst UI design decisions I have ever seen. What is the matter with people? Are we sliding into a second infancy?
You want to know why Linux got to where it is today? By designers knowing when something was functional and thus in need of no further tweaks. Using this idea they built an OS – now we’re regressing into stupidity and a type of Corporate deliberate deafness that is quite depressing as everything is changed for the sake of being changed.

10 years ago anyone coming up with a Start menu that covered the entirety of a wide screen monitor would have attracted widespread contempt and derision. Now people stand around coming out with feeble remarks about how it’s “brave and interesting”.

So, instead of coming together to define a set of base standards which all distros must adhere to, because of pride and professional arrogance we’re fragmenting into dozens of slightly different and increasingly mutually incompatible differences that will, in time, render Linux largely useless and ineffective.

      • velle on June 24, 2013 at 7:59 am

yuh i agree.. even though i have got used to it by just not using it much i bet if they did a poll to see who was in favor of it i bet more would be against it..all i’ve seen is dislike for it so far not that it would matter to rosa..

    • DavidB on June 23, 2013 at 12:52 pm

    Bonjour,

    => 3h pour 1 Go !

    *******************************************************************
    Thank you David
we are victims of our “success”;)
Our server does not keep up. We are putting up a torrent and we loaded (also difficult) images on mirrors which list is here .
The interface is not yet passed to Oma colors ..

  4. Some answers to some questions:

About Delta Packages: We currently don’t have delta packages, but we may have them at some point in the future depending if we have developers to implement it.

About Rolling Release: We’ll have a rolling release branch that people can use, but we’ll also keep doing traditional releases and updates for them, so nobody will be forced to use the rolling release branch.

    Thanks.

ROSA desktop back, because they look a little more identity in the style of the artwork.

    • dro on June 27, 2013 at 12:12 pm

how do you bug test this when you can’t even install it? it ask you which 3 things you want to run on start up? which shouldn’t even be there..so there’s a bug right there in the installer guess i’ll wait until the final release to check it out…

      • velle on June 28, 2013 at 1:18 am

Yea i also wasted a dvd trying to install this with no luck.. It ask me what i wanted to run on start up and live mode froze..I guess i’ll wait on this…

  5. Reminder (see first comment). You can find some workarounds in the forum

However, another alpha is released that fixes a few bugs (including install bug).

Once again: those isos are for testing only and for collecting as much bug reports as possible (and in that POV, it is a real success 😉
We publicly announce them to show the state of the work of our devs. They had (and still have) to harmonize tons of rpms specifications, that had not been done for a very long time.

So, you can install the isos in a virtual machine or a test real machine.

      • dro on June 28, 2013 at 1:53 pm

thank you.. i seen the work around however i don’t have enough linux expirience to edit files through konsole yut..i’ll wait for the new alpha in i586..

      1. I have installed the last iso (20130624) with virtualbox (1500 Mb ram) without any problem.
It is available in both 64 and 32 bits.

          • dro on June 29, 2013 at 7:10 am

cool i’ll give it a try thank you…

          • dro on June 29, 2013 at 7:15 am

hey jcl the last post i read he said 32 bit wasn’t ready yut until they clear a few more bugs just 64 bit..got a link for the 32? appreciate it..

          1. Yes, the 32b is available now. See distro.ibiblio.org from the mirrors list.

    • cory on July 4, 2013 at 2:56 pm

rosa is horrible. i hope this runs like mandriva used to when the finals released…

    • javiar lopez on July 6, 2013 at 7:33 am

man this is just rosa like the 3 other rosa’s they have out already.. the artwork looks nice but it’s just rosa and rosa never ran like mandriva did on my systems.. also that same big ass taskbar menu for 80 year old blind people who need shit blown up in their face…why can’t mandriva just fix the relationships they destroyed and go in their own direction and do it for the community they pushed away?

    • nonnogs on July 9, 2013 at 2:18 pm

      • rugyada on July 9, 2013 at 2:58 pm

      Ciao nonnogs, ben ritrovato.

  6. Hello,
after you have added the repositories, you can install gnome, enlightmement, xfce, window maker, sawfish… even icewm!

    Automatic translation:

    • dave on July 20, 2013 at 8:37 pm

please remove all the rosa stuffs. openmandriva needs and deserves its own identity

      • dro on July 21, 2013 at 7:12 am

      co-sign this…

  7. Yes, you are right. We are also working on that 🙂
